Working with mexican murals


During my twelve years teaching spanish I have been in many seminars, courses an workshops for teachers. I have seen amazing projects, motivated people, new methodologies, but untill now in my daily life at work I usually encounter problems that are not solved and prevent a natural way of learning such us the excess teaching hours, the marks beeing the only goal in the end of the semestr, the lack of space to move the students around in the classroom, the large number of students  and the lack of not enogouh speaking time  for for each student during the lesson. All these factors together generate poor concentration, apathy, stress and complexs in the students.

To learn a language while making any cain of art after school allow the pupils to learn in different way. They already have the bases and he has the time to communicate by making, with a natural context, an stimulating subject and having more attention from the teacher. They can move, work with their hands, speak up, be creative…they interact.

Why should you do artherapy in another language?

Because the main topic of  Artherapy is the human being and there is nothing that motivates more an student than to talk about themselves, what matters to them and what they need. They can choose and change the program, They can propose and choose topics…They also builds the program according to their own interests.

¿Por qué debería hacer arteterapia en otro idioma?

Porque el tema principal del arteterapia es el ser humano y no hay nada que motive más al estudiante que hablar sobre sí mismo, sobre lo que le pasa y lo que necesita. Los participantes pueden elegir y cambiar el programa, pueden proponer y elegir los temas…pueden también construir de acuerdo con sus intereses.

What methodology is used?

I use the communicative approach which is based on the idea that learning language Copy of Cloud 1successfully comes through having to communicate real meaning. Learners are involved in real communication where their natural strategies for language acquisition is used, and this will allow them to use the language.

At the end of each session, I’ll collect all the words learned and the students will receive a word cloud. If we have time, we’ll play with the vocabulary to memorize and to use it later.

 ¿Qué método se usa?

Se usa el método comunicativo que está basado en la idea de que el aprendizaje significativo se produce a través de la comunicación en un contexto real. Los estudiantes se implican en el proceso comunicativo y desarrollan estrategias comunicativas.

Al final de cada sesión, se recogen todas las palabras aprendidas y los estudiantes reciben una nube de palabras. Si se dispone de tiempo, se realizan juegos de memorización con las nuevas palabras, que serán retomadas en sesiones posteriores.

What level of language is required?

Students must already have some bases of the language in order to communicate in Spanish. They need to be at least at the A2 level of the european frame work. During the artherapy lessons they will not make grammar exercices, they’ll  rather speak. It’s the moment to learn more words and to use what they have already learned.

¿Qué nivel de lengua se necesita?

Los estudiantes deben poseer algunas bases lingüísticas para poder comunicarse en español. Necesitan como mínimo tener el nivel A2 del marco europeo de referencia. Durante las sesione de arteterapia no se harán ejercicios de gramática, sino que se centrarán en la conversación. es el momento de aprender más palabras y activar los conocimientos previos.

What learning outcomes are there?

The students are not focused on the correction of their sentences neither on giving the right answer. On the one hand, the artistic process helps them to relax and to express themselves trough not verbal communication as a support to the linguistic learning. On the other hand, art reduces the linguistic blockages focusing the students in the succes of the communication process rather than only in the grammar constructions.

¿Qué beneficios se obtienen de esta forma de aprender?

Los estudiantes nos se centran en construir estructuras complejas o en producir la respuesta correcta. Por una parte, pueden relajarse y expresarse a través de la comunicación no verbal como un apoyo al proceso de aprendizaje. Por otra, la producción artística ayuda a reducir los bloqueos lingüísticos estimulando a los estudiantes en el éxito del proceso comunicativo.
